If you have ever been to Istanbul you will probably have eaten a simit. A sesame sprinkled Turkish bagel, sold freshly every day by men wheeling simit carts, is as evocative of Istanbul as the Bosphorus. On many walks from one wholesale carpet or textiles dealer to another, Susan Deliss has picked up a simit along the way to nibble as she rummages through piles of textiles and kilims.
For Susan, the deep red and indigo and natural linen colours of her new weave are as reminiscent of antique Anatolian textiles as simits are reminiscent of her textile travels in Turkey. So, the happy mix of visual and culinary heritages that have so inspired Susan have also inspired the name of her new weave, SIMIT.
SIMIT magically recreates the feel and appearance of some of the textiles that Susan has found and loved on her travels but, unlike these textiles which are often only fragments and always only available in tiny quantities, it is available for sale by the metre.
