Susan Deliss has a collection of ewe and kente cloths from West Africa, some silk, some cotton. With geometric patterns, they are masterpieces of weaving and colour. Made on very narrow looms, the strips of cloth were joined into larger textiles that would have been draped round the wearer. Susan particularly enjoyed viewing the collection of these cloths at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston.
Hanim was inspired by these extraordinary and often underrated textiles. With a single tone contemporary colour palette, it is a pared back version of Susan's Demetra weave. As with Demetra, Susan was determined for Hanim to have a textured surface that gave some sense of the weaves that had so inspired her.
